Assignment 4: Creating a faceted hierarchical classification scheme
LIBR 287: Seminar in Information Science
Instructor: Robert Bruce

Objective

In this assignment you will create a faceted hierarchy classification scheme to organize the following (see page 2) series of publications (titles of books and musical scores) for a public or academic library. After you’ve created your list of facets, please write a double-spaced five pages (minimum) to ten pages (maximum) narrative in which you justify why you choose each particular facet in your faceted hierarchical classification scheme. Following this narrative, list your facets. Please indent your facet hierarchy for readability (if applicable). Here’s an example from the book, Theory of library classification by Brian Buchanan (1979, pp. 66-67) on zoology.

Form of presentation (facet)

  • Essays
  • Periodicals

Operations (facet)

  • Collection
  • Experiments
    • Field experiments
    • Laboratory experiments
  • Identification
    • Classification / Taxonomy
    • Naming / Nomenclature

General Processes (facet)

  • Development / maturation
  • Adapation

Activities (facet)

  • Activities / behavior
    • Social behavior
      • Play
    • Hibernation
    • Migration

Attributes (facet)

  • Intelligence
  • Aggression

Note: I do not want you to determine anything more about these publications other than what their titles suggest. In other words, please don’t search for these publications online or view them in print format to determine their subject matter.

Hint: Be creative in developing your facets. As a librarian, you may decide to create a general reference type of facet because a title indicates it contains that type of information.
